E-Filing in North Carolina

Doing your own taxes is never easy but, hey, at least the IRS is doing its part to try to make it simple. E-filing is getting more and more popular every year and holds the title as the fastest way to get your tax return. The e-filing program is called “Free File” and originated from a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance group, a group of tax prep software manufacturers. E-filing is available to all filers but there are some important things you ought to know.

  • Tax payers with an adjusted gross income of $57,000 or less can use the program free of charge.
  • This adjusted gross income of $57,000 or less applies regardless of your filing status (married or single).
  • Free File is for individuals only, but a sole proprietor who files a Schedule C with a 1040 Form can also use the program free of charge.
  • Free File may also be eligible for your state tax returns, this includes e-filing in North Carolina.
  • Depending on which company you use, they may offer a free electronic extension beyond the April 15 deadline.
  • This is not a downloadable program; the software is encrypted to protect privacy and is saved online.

The benefits of e-filing include getting the correct and current filing material sooner than other computer filing software, fewer mistakes, and your return gets processed by the IRS sooner. The IRS indicates their turn around for e-filing is usually less than two weeks, especially if you sign up for direct deposit.

You can still hire a tax professional. A tax preparer can still work with you to complete your return and electronically file your return on your behalf. Or, you can do it yourself by purchasing tax software and installing it on your computer. Software is available at your neighborhood electronics store, department store, or can be downloaded from a company’s website. There are lots of software choices so be sure you pick the software that best fits your filing situation.
