Limits to File Claims in NC State Courts Set to Increase

On August 1, NC Senate Bill 452 will go into effect increasing the amounts in controversy that North Carolina civil courts may hear.

At present, small claims courts may not hear cases where the amount in controversy exceeds $5,000. When Senate Bill 452 goes into effect, that amount will increase to $10,000.

Senate Bill 452 will also increase the jurisdictional amounts for District and Superior Court. On August 1, the limit for claims in District Court will increase from $10,000 to $25,000.  Claims in Superior Court will change to those seeking damages that exceed $25,000.
